Traditional images of Japanese women had long placed them within a family setting, emphasizing their gentleness and meekness. In inter-war Japan, social change began to redefine everyday Japanese life, and new images of Japnese women began to appear. Barbara Sato's monograph, The New Japanese Woman: Modernity, Media, and Women in Interwar Japan (Duke Univ. Press, 2003), describes the irruption of these images in a modernizing Japan. Your ticket of admission to Barbara Sato's BOOKNOTES presentation will be a signed copy of The New Japanese Woman, purchased from Good Day Books. Signed paperback copies of The New Japanese Woman may be purchased at our shop for three thousand three yen („3003) each, tax included.
