Niall Murtagh grew up in Ireland, then spent most of his twenties "on the road" in Europe, Australia, Asia, and the Americas. He has hitchhiked over 25,000 kilometers through 60-odd countries, sailed from Africa to the Caribbean on a home-built yacht, and lived both the low life in Sumatra and and the high life in the Andes. At some point in his travels, he decided that he needed a job.

After coming to Japan in 1986, Murtagh completed a Japanese language program in Osaka and a Ph.D. program in the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He then jumped in at the deep end of the Japanese corporate world by entering one of the largest and most conservative of the Mitsubishi companies. As a short-term cultural fling turned into a 14-year career, Murtagh occasionally fit in but more often opted out of the oppressive Mitsubishi culture. He departed Mitsubishi in early 2005 to work as a business consultant and an independent translator.

Murtagh has written for the mainstream media in Australia, Ireland, Japan, and the UK on a vareity of topics, including corporate culture and travel. The Blue-Eyed Salaryman, his recent book about switching roles from citizen of the world to corporate functionary of Japan, Inc., has been featured by BBC radio, Newsweek(Japan), Bloomberg, and The Sunday Times (UK). Japanese and German editions of The Blue-Eyed Salaryman will be published later this year. Those who would like to learn more about Murtagh should attend his BOOKNOTES presentation and visit his website: www.niallmurtagh.info
