Mark Schilling was born in Zanesville, Ohio, USA in 1949. He arrived in Tokyo in 1975 and has lived in Tokyo ever since. He reviews Japanese films for The Japan Times and reports on the Japanese film industry for Variety. For the past ten years, Schilling has a programmer for the Udine Far East Film Festival, Europe's largest festival of Asian popular cinema. Schilling is the author of: Tokyo After Dark: A Personal Guide to the Best of Asia's Most Exciting City (The Japan Times, 1992); Sumo: A Fan's Guide (The Japan Times, 1994); The Encyclopedia of Popular Japanese Culture (Weatherhill, 1997); Contemporary Japanese Film (Weatherhill, 1999); and The Yakuza Movie Book: A Guide to Japan- ese Gangster Films (Stone Bridge Press, 2003). His most recent book, No Borders, No Limits: Nikkatsu Action Cinema (FAB Press, 2008), is the first book in English on Nikkatsu Action, a genre of gritty crime films that influenced the styles and attitudes of millions of young Japanese in the '50s and 60's. An eight-film Nikkatsu Action retrospective narrated by Schilling was screened at the Japan Society in New York in September 2007 and since then at venues across the United States and Canada.
