In a rare public appearance, Donald Keene, gave an inspired, polished talk on the life and times of the late Tokugawa era painter Watanabe Kazan.
He is pictured below signing a copy of his book on the topic, Frog in the Well.

Professor Keene, pictured below, speaking to a full house.

The BOOKNOTES series will resume next year.  We have  already scheduled some interesting speakers.

BOOKCLUBS

The book club took time off from discussing weighty geopolitical matters to give us a smile.

Inside Terrorism by Bruce Hoffman will be discussed on 17 December. The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander M. Smith will be discussed by the non-native speakers’ group on 10 December.

Conan the Librarian says:

Strangest title sold last month:  Living With Crazy Buttocks by Kaz Cooke.

We were visited by a time-traveler recently.  “Keene must have been wonderful,” she said, the day before he spoke.

Strangest request of the month: “I want a Hebrew Bible in English because it was written in Greek!”

Question from the optimist of the month: “Is everything here 100 yen?”

Strangest greeting: “I’ve come to borrow some books.”

Strangest request of the month: “Please buy some books I have to give away.”

Strangest question of the month: “Do these books cost money?”

Answer to an odd inquiry: Yes, there are other books besides textbooks.

He came, looked and left without buying anything.  He returned a few minutes later, saying he forgot to buy a certain book.  The title of the book:  Memory Loss.

Last piece of holiday advice:  Drink deep from books, they don’t come with hangovers!
