Donald Richie gave a polished talk on ‘The Art of Travel’ that was much appreciated by his attentive audience. His talk covered a lot of ground including getting lost in Marrakesh, reading Flaubert on the Nile and the situation in Burma.

Walking the Old Tokaido Road: Tokyo→Kyoto #6 Progress report: Our intrepid duo continued their Tokaido Road hike from Oiso to Odawara.
Pictured below is the noted “poetry house” called “Shigitatsu-An” at Oiso.



It is said Saigyo, (1118 -1190) the famous poet, made the following poem near this location.
Kokoro naki mi ni mo aware wa shirarekeri shigi tatsu sawa no aki no yūgure
Even to the heartless this sad beauty is felt: snipe-birds rising from a stream in the autumn sunset.
