USED BOOK EXCHANGE/PURCHASE

Good Day Books generally exchanges or trades for used books: we issue in-store credit vouchers in exchange for books hand-carried or shipped to our shop. The vouchers can be used to purchase other books from our shop. A credit voucher would remain valid for up to one year after the date on which we'd received your books. The amount of credit that you'd receive would range up to half of our estimated selling price for your books, but would depend on their condition and subject matter. For example, if we should estimate that we'll be able to sell your copy of Robert Whiting's Tokyo Underworld for one thousand yen, we would issue a credit voucher for five hundred yen in exchange for your book.

Good Day Books may, however, pay up to 20% of our estimated selling price in cash for high-quality non-fiction, a category that includes, but is not limited to, natural science, philosophy, mathematics, history, and economics. We do not pay cash for fiction.

USED BOOK EVALUATION

We evaluate the prospects for re-sale of each book brought to Good Day Books on the basis of the book's subject matter, physical condition, format, and date of publication, as well as the number of copies that we already have in stock. Since our shop's storage space is very limited, we cannot keep in stock more than a few copies of any title. We thus may not accept for resale every book brought to our shop, even if that book had earlier been purchased from Good Day Books. Because it is not uncommon for Good Day Books to have multiple copies of a title in stock at the beginning of a week and no copies of the title in stock by the end of the week, do not hesitate to bring to our shop for re-evaluation books that we once declined to accept for resale.

To evaluate a book, we must be able to see, touch, and (not infrequently) smell the book. We must be able to turn the book's pages and examine its binding. We cannot evaluate books on the basis of oral descriptions, written descriptions, lists, or photographs.

Please bring your books to Good Day Books during our scheduled evaluation hours, which extend from 11:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from 11:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. If you do so, your books will usually be evaluated while you wait. Your wait will depend on the number of books that you've brought to be evaluated and the number of books already waiting to be evaluated when your books arrived. Bringing your books to our shop during our scheduled evaluation hours would enable you to immediately pick up your credit voucher (and to retrieve the books that we did not accept for resale) or to reclaim your books if you weren't satisfied with the results of our evaluation.

Used books that are either brought to our shop outside of our scheduled evaluation hours or are shipped to our shop are usually evaluated during the next scheduled evaluation day. Books that are accepted for resale will be placed on our shelves for reselling and the amount of credit recorded in our credit log book. Books that are not accepted for resale must be picked up within two weeks after the date on which your books were delivered to our shop. We will dispose of books that are not retrieved within this two week period.

USED BOOK CREDIT VOUCHERS

A used book credit voucher may be used to pay the entire pre-tax price of most used books offered for sale in our shop, but may not be used to purchase books listed in our Rare Book database. A used book credit voucher may also be used to pay 20% of the pre-tax price of most new books offered for sale in our shop, but may not be used to purchase new books that we sell on consignment, such as Freelancing in Tokyo by David Chester. In addition, a book credit voucher may not be used to purchase newspapers or magazines, or to pay the 5% consumption tax on any purchase. The 5% consumption tax, which is calculated on a purchase before the credit voucher is applied to the purchase, must always be paid in cash.

Please complete a "Used Book Request" for any desired used English book that you cannot find on our shelves. We routinely keep "Used Book Requests" on file for six months and fill between two-thirds and three-fourths of such requests during this period. We do not charge a fee for this service.
